[This web version of the WMEAT 95 shows only the rankings "index", which lists countries alphabetically and gives their rank for each variable. The printed version also contains a rank-order list of countries and values for each variable.]
Tables for Central Government Expenditures and its three relative variables have been excluded in this edition due to the lack of sufficient data for countries in Africa and Central Asia.
Users of these rankings should be aware that they are based on data whose accuracy is in many cases qualified, as indicated by markings in Tables I and II signifying "not available," "rough estimate," or "estimate." These tables and the Statistical Notes should be consulted in interpreting the rankings.
Entries marked "not available" ("NA") are based on very rough estimates. While it is considered preferable to include countries with such data in the rankings rather than omit them, these estimates should be understood as having a wide range of error above and below the estimated value, a range extending well beyond the level of neighboring countries in the rankings in most cases.
The variables, their abbreviations, and their data units are as follows:

NOTE: All monetary values are in 1994 dollars; for most countries, national currencies were converted at average annual 1994 exchange rates. It should be noted that country rankings can shift considerably from edition to edition due to changes in exchange rates and in the base year for conversion used in each edition. For a discussion of the impact of shifts in exchange rate base years, see WMEAT 1988, Statistical Notes, Conversion of National Currencies to Dollars.
