STATEMENT BY NICHOLAS BURNS, SPOKESMAN

EL SALVADOR
$10 MILLION LAND TRANSFER AGREEMENT

Secretary of State Warren Christopher and El Salvador Foreign Minister Ramon Gonzalez signed an agreement today providing $10 million to complete the land transfer program called for in the Peace Accords signed in 1992.

The 1992 Accords call for the transfer of agricultural land to 35,000 former combatants and squatters in ex-conflict zones. Nearly 32,000, or 90 percent, of the transfers have taken place as of January 23, 1996.

Thus far, the United States has provided $55 million for this process. The $10 million announced today will provide for the transfer and processing of the remaining credit and technical assistance to farmers and funding for microenterprise activities.
