U.S. Department of State
97/01/23 Statement: Possible Sanctions Violation by Libyan Aircraft
Office of the Spokesman

Press Statement by Nicholas Burns/Spokesman
January 23, 1997

Possible Sanctions Violation by Libyan Aircraft

We have seen press reports that a Libyan airliner was permitted to land
and take off from Ghana's Accra airport last Tuesday, January 21. We
are investigating this report to confirm the facts. This would be a
serious violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 748,
which prohibits Libyan aircraft from engaging in international flights,
and we will pursue the matter in the Security Council and Sanctions
Committee.
