                  Kazakstan: Death of USAID Contractor  
 
 
 
We were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the death yesterday of  
Chris Gehring, a USAID contractor working in Almaty, Kazakstan.  We  
extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.  
 
Mr. Gehring became Director of the Central Asian Office of Internews, a  
USAID contractor, two years ago.  He had worked diligently from that day  
to develop professional broadcasting in Kazakstan and across Central  
Asia.  He will be sorely missed by his colleagues in Almaty and around  
the world.  
 
The police are investigating and we await the results of that  
investigation.
