                 Investigation of Nazi Gold in Swiss Banks  
  
The State Departmentās Office of the Historian will undertake a thorough  
and immediate study of the retrieval and disbursement of Nazi assets  
after the Second World War. The Departmentās review will focus on U.S.  
diplomatic efforts in the post-war period, including our interaction  
with the Swiss government. We hope that this review will provide a  
greater understanding of the role played by the U.S. and other Allies.  
  
This is an important matter and therefore will be addressed with the  
greatest possible urgency.  However, a thorough examination could take  
several months. The conclusions will be made public upon completion of  
the review.
