96/09/16 Statement: Romania and Hungary Sign Treaty
Office of the Spokesman
Press Statement By Nicholas Burns, Spokesman
September 16, 1996
ROMANIA AND HUNGARY SIGN BASIC TREATY
Romania and Hungary signed today a Basic Treaty on
Understanding, Cooperation, and Good-Neighborliness,
and expect to ratify it in both parliaments as early
as October.
The U.S. Government views this agreement as a
significant achievement. Not only will the
completion of the Basic Treaty help strengthen
relations between these two important countries in
Central Europe, it also will demonstrate the
commitment of Hungary and Romania to rejoin the
Western community of democratic nations and is
consistent with the purposes of NATO enlargement.
The U.S. Government congratulates both sides for
the statesmanship and political courage they
demonstrated in reaching this important agreement.
We recognize that this treaty can make a valuable
contribution to peace and stability in Central Europe
and hope that it can be ratified and enter into
effect soon.
