             Philippines--Peace Agreement With Muslim Rebels


The United States welcomes the agreement between the Government of the 
Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front.

Agreement by the parties represents a significant step toward peace and 
will contribute to regional stability and prospects for economic growth 
in the southern Philippines and the neighboring region.

The U.S. Government commends both sides for their determination to find 
a mutually acceptable solution, and hopes that the negotiated resolution 
of this long-running conflict can inspire similar efforts elsewhere to 
resolve disputes in a peaceful and democratic manner.
