U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
Taken Questions of June 15, 1994

1. CYPRUS Q: Have the Secretary and President Clerides spoken by phone recently?

A: YES. THE SECRETARY CALLED PRESIDENT CLERIDES LAST TUESDAY, JUNE 7, TO DISCUSS THE PRESENT STATUS OF THE UN'S EFFORTS TO RESOLVE THE CYPRUS ISSUE. THEY DISCUSSED THE CURRENT UN NEGOTIATIONS ON IMPLEMENTATION OF THE UN'S PACKAGE OF CONFIDENCE-BUILDING MEASURES.

2. IRAQ/TURKEY Q: Has a resolution on flushing the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline been presented at the UN?

A: NO. IN RECENT WEEKS, THERE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSIONS AMONG INTERESTED PARTIES CONCERNING A TECHNICAL RESOLUTION THAT MIGHT PROVIDE FOR FLUSHING OF THE TURKISH PIPELINE.

--THE SPECIFIC ARRANGEMENTS FOR A PIPELINE FLUSHING HAVE NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED. THUS, NO RESOLUTION HAS BEEN PRESENTED, AND IT WOULD BE PREMATURE TO SPECULATE ON WHAT TERMS A TECHNICAL RESOLUTION MIGHT INCLUDE.
