U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
Taken Question for May 24, 1994

1. UKRAINE Q: What would be the U.S. position in the event Ukraine asks that this matter be raised before the U.N.?

A: We understand Ukraine Foreign Minister Zlenko has written to the U.N regarding the situation in Crimea. We do not know if Ukraine will formally ask that this be discussed.

--The United States continues to support Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its current borders. Ukraine's ultimate decision on whether or not to raise this at the U.N. does not affect our fundamental position.

--If the U.N. Security Council addresses this we will, of course, reiterate our fundamental position.(###)
