U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
Taken Question of May 23, 1994

1. HAITI Q: What is your estimate of the volume of drugs being trafficked through Haiti?

A: AS REPORTED IN OUR RECENTLY RELEASED INTERNATIONAL NARCOTICS CONTROL STRATEGY REPORT, HAITI CONTINUES TO BE USED AS A BASE OF OPERATIONS AND A TRANSSHIPMENT POINT FOR THE MOVEMENT OF COCAINE TO THE UNITED STATES. HOWEVER, COMPARED TO OTHER AREAS, SUCH AS THE BAHAMAS OR MEXICO, THE CURRENT LEVEL OF DRUG-RELATED AIR AND MARITIME ACTIVITY THROUGH HAITI IS LOW.

--EVEN SO, DRUG TRAFFICKING THREATENS HAITI'S RETURN TO DEMOCRACY, CORRUPTS LAW ENFORCEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE, AND HAS A DISRUPTIVE IMPACT ON HAITI'S FRAGILE ECONOMY.(###)
