U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
Taken Questions of May 10, 1994

1. India Q: Has India delayed deployment of the Prithvi missile? Is the Indian Government's recent delay of a test of the Prithvi missile connected to the visit next week of Indian Prime Minister Rao?

A: THE SHORT RANGE PRITHVI HAS BEEN UNDERGOING DEVELOPMENT TESTS. WHILE PREPARATIONS FOR THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE PRITHVI HAVE CONTINUED, THERE HAVE BEEN NO SIGNS THAT ANY MISSILES HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN DEPLOYED.

--WE ARE UNAWARE OF ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE RECENT DECISION TO DELAY A TEST OF THE PRITHVI AND THE PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT.

2. India Q: Is nonproliferation going to be an issue for discussion during the visit next week of Indian Prime Minister Rao?

A: PRIME MINISTER RAO'S VISIT TO WASHINGTON WILL ALLOW DISCUSSION OF A BROAD RANGE OF ISSUES, AS IS APPROPRIATE BETWEEN THE LEADERS OF MAJOR POWERS.

--WE EXPECT THAT THIS WILL INCLUDE NONPROLIFERATION. (###)
