Taken Questions of 10/19/93

1. SOMALIA: OAKLEY'S MEETINGS
Q: Did Ambassador Oakley talk about troop deployments during his trip to the region?

A: AMBASSADOR OAKLEY CERTAINLY TALKED ABOUT TROOP DEPLOYMENTS WHILE OUTLINING PRESIDENT CLINTON'S POLICY ON SOMALIA FOR REGIONAL LEADERS, U.N. OFFICIALS, AND SOMALI POLITICAL LEADERS.

HE DID NOT MAKE ANY DEALS TO WITHDRAW U.S. TROOPS.

2: HAITI: EMBARGO ENFORCEMENT
Q. What is being done to enforce the embargo along Haiti's land border with the Dominican Republic?

A: THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC HAS STATED ITS COMMITMENT TO ENFORCE THE EMBARGO.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO ROADS SUITABLE FOR FUEL TANKER TRUCKS TRAVELLING BETWEEN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND HAITI. OUR EMBASSY IN SANTO DOMINGO REPORTS THAT CHECKPOINTS AT THESE AND OTHER BORDER CROSSINGS ARE FULLY MANNED, AND BORDER PATROLS ARE ACTIVE.

WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE SITUATION.
