James B. Steinberg is Director of the Department's Policy Planning Staff. Mr. Steinberg, previously Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research has a distinguished career in national security policy issues.
Immediately prior to joining the Department, Mr. Steinberg was a Senior Analyst at the RAND Corporation. In addition he has worked as the Senior Deputy Issues Director on National Security for the Dukakis campaign, at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, on the staff of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and as minority counsel on the U.S. Senate's Labor and Human Resources Committee.
In the Carter Administration, Mr. Steinberg served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Attorney General after clerking for Judge David L. Bazelon of the District of Columbia Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals.
Mr. Steinberg is author of a number of papers and books on U.S. national security, principally on U.S.-European issues. His most recent book, published by RAND in 1993, is An Ever Closer Union: European Integration and its Implications for the Future of U.S.-European Relations.
