Michael Matheson assumed the duties of Acting Legal Adviser for the Department of State in July 1996. He has worked for the Department since 1972. From 1972 to 1976 he served as an attorney in the Legal Affairs Bureau. In 1976 he was promoted to an Assistant Legal Adviser and in 1983 he became a Deputy Legal Adviser. In 1989 he assumed the duties of Principal Deputy Legal Adviser.
Before joining the U.S. Department of State he served as General Counsel for the U.S. Air Force. From 1968-69 he was an attorney with the Washington D.C. law firm, Wilmer, Cutler and Pickering.
Mr. Matheson received his law degree from Stanford Law School in 1968 and his B.A. in 1965. He was an Editor of the Stanford Law Review and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
He received the 1991 Federal Bar Association's Tom C. Clark Award for Outstanding Federal Lawyer of the Year in 1991.
